Objective

To determine whether long-term therapy of prostaglandine analogues caused proliferative or degenerative effects on the iris and conjunctiva of patients with glaucoma.

Methods

14 patients planning filtering surgery for uncontrolled IOP caused by POAG were randomized to receive topical prostaglandine analogues / n= 7 / or alternative medication before surgery / n=7 /. The specimen of iris and conjunctiva tissue was obtained from each patient during surgery and was subjected to histological evaluation.

Results

No degenerative or pathological changes were seen in the prostaglandine analogues treated irides despite that macroscopically colour of irides was changed. The features of stromal inflammation were detected / 4 out of 7 patients / in the histological sections of conjunctiva.
