The well-known advantages of simulator training are being brought from pilot training to medicine. Simulators allow the realistic training of surgical procedures without any risk for the patients. Endoscopy and laparascopy simulators already play an important role in modern training of abdominal surgery. In ophthalmology the development of training-simulators looks back at a history of about 10 years. Worldwide there are several groups active in developing simulators or simulation-algorithms for ophthalmosurgical procedures. Some highly sophisticated simulator products are available for slit lamp examinations, cataract and vitreo-retinal surgery.
The current developments in the field of ophthalmological simulation for teaching and training are presented. The chances of simulation based training are discussed.
