Several studies show that inflammation is involved in the formation of drusen and choroidal neovascularization in AMD. However, there is some controversy about the relevance of these processes in human AMD as most of the data was found in a laser-induced model of choroidal neovascularization. In this model, a primary inflammation in response to the laser injury triggers the choroidal neovascularization. Although this model captures many of the important features of the human disease, it also may involve processes not present in AMD. The role of inflammation in AMD and the relevance of the experimental data will be discussed.
