Introduction: The provision of wrist surgery in the UK has been shared between Plastic and Orthopaedic surgeons. This split in specialization has implications on training which warrant further investigation.
Method: We carried out a survey of all the Plastic Surgery Units in the UK to determine the number of plastic surgeons providing wrist surgery and the number of trainees interested in Hand and Wrist surgery subspecialisation.
We performed an extensive search to determine the relevant courses available in the UK.
Results: The Plastic Surgery Intercollegiate Curriculum details specific aspects of wrist surgery, which trainees need to be competent with. Our results show, most plastic surgery units do not provide a wrist surgery service.
Discussion: We would like to share our experience of the difficulties encountered in setting up a wrist surgery practice in the UK. We also explore the training opportunities and the need to perhaps consider restructuring the plastic surgery curriculum.
