Abstract

Cochlear explantation involves the removal of a cochlear implant due to medical indications, device failure and in some cases personal desire of the patient. Sometimes the implant may not need to be removed or replaced with a new device, but just repositioned.

We present several cases from our practice. The diferent causes for explantation are discussed from audiological and surgical point of view. Review of available literature is presented.

Our experience shows that cochlear implantation is a safe procedure with good results, but in some cases the patient’s expectations are not met and reoperation or explantation is necessary.
