Abstract
Rhinoscleroma is a progressive granulomatous disease affecting the nose and laterextending into the nasopharynx, oropharynx, the larynx and sometimes the trachea and bronchi. It may occur at any age and in either sex, but is more common in females and in the middle aged.It is seen mainly in central and south-eastern Europe, North Africa (endemic in Egypt), Indonesia and Central and South America.
Pathology: The disease is caused by the Gram-negative bacillus, Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis, also known as Frisch bacillus. The characteristic histological features include granulomatous tissue infiltrates in the submucosa, characterized by thepresence of plasma cells, lymphocytes and eosinophils. Besides, there are scattered large foam cells (Mikulicz cells) and Russel bodies. The disease may extend to involve the nasopharynx, hard palate, trachea and main bronchi.
In this study we reported some atypical presentations in the form of:
- 1.
- a large nasopharyngeal mass with normal nasal cavity,
- 2.
- a large vocal fold polyp with normal nasal cavity and subglottic region (which is the common site of laryngeal affection).
